The Icelandic Swimming Association (abbreviated as SSI) was founded on the 25th of February 1951. The Association has responsibility for the administration and development of all aquatic activities in Iceland, and is affiliated to LEN and FINA.
In terms of participation, swimming is the most popular sporting activity in Iceland. Visiting the swimming pool is a part of the daily and weekly lifestyle of most Icelanders – of all ages. In fact, most communities have a swimming pool – which are usually outdoors and supported by germal thermal heating. It is required by law that all children learn to swim and therefore, swimming has been included in the school curriculum for more than 60 years.
Today there are more than 30 active swimming clubs in Iceland. Competitive swimming in Iceland is well developed with many swimmers going on to achieve international recognition with the National Team. Indeed, a significant number of Icelandic swimmers have competed in finals or won medals at junior and senior (LEN / FINA) international championships.
Masters swimming has been developing fast over the last 10 years, with several clubs offering training and competitive opportunties to their Masters swimmers. Within the last 5 years, water polo has begun to develop rapidly in Iceland, whilst it is the vision of the Icelandic Swimming Association that synchronized swimming and diving are able to develop in the coming years. Finally, open water swimming is an activity often undertaken by Icelanders – either by swimming in the many lakes or in the sea; and is an area that the Association will be looking to develop in future years.
